Alfred Munnings Captain Prince Antoine of Orleans and Braganza, 1918, oil on canvas, 193⁄4 ×24in (50.5 ×61cm)

Renowned as one of England’s finest painters of horses, Alfred Munnings’ equine subjects will feature in a major exhibition at the National Army Museum, London, alongside his impressionist portraits and pastoral landscapes.

Sir Alfred Munnings was commissioned by the Canadian War Memorials Fund, created by Lord Beaverbrook, as an official war artist to capture the fighting front and logistical work behind the lines. The exhibition brings together 41 original paintings by Munnings shown together in England for the first time since 1919. Justin Maciejewski, director of the National Army Museum comments: ‘These are amongst the best work by the artist and, exhibited together, they tell an evocative story of service and sacrifice by both soldiers and horses.’
