Pushing Paper

Isabel Seligman

Although not explicitly stated, the title of this collection and exhibition contains an echo of Paul Klee’s definition of drawing as ‘taking a line for a walk’. An exploration of contemporary drawing from the 1970s to the present, there is here a fascinating and often challenging collection of work, some of which may be familiar, much of which is probably less so. Drawing is an art form that obstinately endures in its own right. You only have to look at the work of David Hockney, several of whose drawings appear here, to see the form at perhaps its current triumphal best. All of the drawing media are represented and the styles and subject matter are infinitely varied, from pure abstract to entirely representational. It’s a fascinating tour accompanied by an explanatory text that is both thorough and intriguing.
