Renoir: an intimate biography

An enigma to many of his contemporaries and still a somewhat controversial figure, Pierre-Auguste Renoir was both an Impressionist and a professional portrait painter. He pursued the latter to compensate for the poverty in which he was born and often later found himself. The struggle between the need for a wealthy bourgeois clientele and the artistic freedom that Impressionism offered was a defining factor of his life and perhaps explains Pissarro’s remark, ‘who can fathom that most changeable of men?’
