Colour and combinations

Hazel Soan advises on how to choose and mix colours for best effect in your painting, whether you are using oil, acrylic or watercolour

Deciding which colours to use in any one painting takes practice and experience, so here are my suggestions from my own paintings to get you started. First you need to establish a set of colours to work with, so I have listed the colours I use regularly with the basic essentials highlighted (left) in bold – a warm and cool version of the three primaries, pigments with varying degrees of transparency and opacity and some basic earths, plus white and black in oils and acrylics.

The Gargoyle, watercolour, 11x15in (28x38cm).

I used cool and warm versions of red, yellow and blue to mix the colours: permanent rose (c), cadmium red (w), aureolin (c), yellow ochre (w), helio cerulean (c) and ultramarine blue (w)

WATERCOLOUR

Titanium white/Chinese white

Indian yellow

Aureolin
