Returning to the scene

Bob Brandt returns again and again to Trafalgar Square to record what, for him, captures its true essence. With the sequence of paintings shown here he reveals how this process develops
Afternoon in the Square, oil on canvas panel, 18¼×22¼in (46×56cm).

I reduced the subject area, showing just part of one fountain, but keeping the location still identifiable by including a lion. Most of the figures seen are hurrying on their way, but two have chosen to pause, sitting on the edge of the fountain to watch the world go by just for a few moments

It is the stuff of detective fiction that the villain will sooner or later return to the scene of his crime. I have no idea whether there is any truth in this but I do know that painters frequently find themselves compelled to go back time and again to try to record a location more accurately.
