ART BOOKS & DVDS

Foundations of Drawing

Al Gury Watson Guptill books are always good value for money and this is no exception. While the title suggests something relatively basic, it is really more of a masterclass, although it also gets to grips with its subject from the ground up. The subtitle (a practical guide to art history, tools, techniques, and styles) provides more of a clue and the book itself amounts to something I have been championing for a while: a comprehensive guide to the history and practice of drawing that looks at how things have been and can be done, as well as defining approaches for the student. Al Gury has 30 years’ experience of teaching and has clearly learned a lot in that time. He writes eloquently and his plentiful example illustrations are well chosen. If you regard drawing as an art in itself, and want to learn more, look no further.
