Autumn is the time of year when the trees grab everybody’s attention, but although the change in colour is quite a spectacle, I’m more often drawn to the general quality of light than anything else. Through September and October when the sun casts a warm hue and is low in the sky, I go looking for subjects, especially later in the afternoon when the shadows are longer. In this painting I have concentrated on achieving the golden light of an autumn afternoon, which is contrasted with cool, dark shadows for maximum impact.
