Professional status

In response to Jan Cantle’s letter about the terminology ‘professional artist’ you offered a very appropriate definition. I have not looked up the dictionary’s definition of ‘amateur’ fearing a circular argument! The gallery that Jan refers to should have defined the term in order to provide meaning to the restriction in their rules. Gustave Caillebotte and Vincent van Gogh are two examples of great artists who would not have qualified as a ‘professional artist’ for that gallery – hmm.

Some artists, even some of your contributors, describe themselves as ‘a professional painter’ or some such. That rankles. I have never heard a member of any of the august professions such as doctors, dentists, architects describe themselves as professionals, it’s simply taken as obvious. Surely it’s best left to others to describe you as such if they think the term has merit. Paul Hollingsworth, by email
