PATHETIC: SKITTLED FOR 58 ENGLAND FAIL THE TEST AGAIN
England coach Trevor Bayliss compared England’s batsmen to “deer in the headlights” after this abysmal performance saw the Test team’s winter plumb depths so low they were positively subterranean. The 4-0 Ashes humbling at the hands of Australia was bad. But it had nothing on this abject batting capitulation at Eden Park that saw England flirt with historic humiliation before they eventually scrambled to a first innings total of 58. At one stage, when they were 27-9, Joe Root’s team looked certain to post their country’s lowest total in 141 years of Test cricket. Only a spirited unbeaten 33 from Craig Overton, coming in at number nine on his recall to the team, saw England avoid the ultimate indignity.
