SNIPE OVER SETTERS
In the pre-Euro era a jangle of coins would reveal Ireland’s deep bond with the land. Sitting proud on its currency were the bull, an Irish hunter, the salmon, red stag and woodcock. There was a missed trick, however, with the penny and tuppenny, which bore fanciful birds; they should have included those other two icons of the isle’s sporting life, the red setter and the snipe.
