Hello and welcome to the April issue of T&M... your favourite tractor magazine, but with an additional 16 pages! This, obviously, enables us to pack in more features and news for your delectation and delight – which is useful, as the events’ calendar hit full throttle over the weekend of 1-2
March, in the shape of Tractor World.
I can’t let this opportunity pass without mentioning the fantastic
indoor show at the Three Counties Showground, as it was a
pleasure to meet up with old friends and take in the sights and
sounds – particularly as it was bigger and better than ever.
Mark Woodward and his team pulled off a real coup by erecting
one of the largest temporary enclosures I think I’ve ever seen,
which bridged the gap between the Avon and Wye Halls to
create the ideal environment for exhibitors and traders alike.
Of course, it was the tractors that everyone went to see and they
didn’t disappoint. Besides the concours entries and class-winning
exhibits, the overall standard of machinery on show was astounding.
Being a sucker for originality, I was immediately drawn to Neil
Rollings’ 1953 David Brown Cropmaster and Ralph Owen’s
1964 MF 135, but Colin Edwards’ big Allis-Chalmers One Ninety
on the A-C club stand was also very pleasing to the eye.
The weather on the Saturday of the show was glorious,
and ideal for the auction, but the Sunday didn’t fare quite so
well, particularly when it came to loading time. Thankfully,
as I write, spring seems to have arrived and so a few
more jobs might get done on my own machinery.
Some progress has been made of late, in that the longsuffering
McCormick IH 276 has received an instrumentation
upgrade. Well, technically, that should read downgrade,
as the electrical temperature gauge has been replaced
by a capillary-type arrangement from a B-275.
Numerous problems with replacement sender units and the
original AC gauge led to the decision to go back to basics and,
touch wood, that appears to have been the right thing to do.
