My Wild Life
A Night in a Tree
By T.J. Conrads
Years ago, Don Thomas wrote about a spoof on the many Slams hunters go after: sheep, moose, deer, etc. He coined his own, called the Ham Slam, a selection of Sus scrofa ranging from Russian boar, warthog, bush pig, and javelina. Javelina, or more correctly, peccaries, though, are not related to the pig family; they are in the family Tayassuidae, which includes three subspecies native to the Americas. I added a fifth species, the wild hog, a mixture of Eurasian hogs and Russian boar that inhabit much of the southern states, are a perfect bowhunting animal, and make fabulous table fare.
