Maintaining a healthy distance from each other is a priority for people all over the world nowadays, but how far should you keep from wildlife when on a walking safari? Calvet Nkomo, head guide at Somalisa Camp in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, has been guiding since 1995 and is one of Zimbabwe’s most experienced walking guides. He talks about three zones of distance guides should recognise when leading guests in the bush:
The comfort zone: for best viewing, keep at least 70 metres from big game such as lion, leopard or buffalo and 50m for a bull elephant.
