CD Album Reviews

Collections and reissues take centre stage this issue as Elvis, Buddy Holly and Cliff Richard all get classics repackaged in superb form. But there’s also some eclectic new rockin’ sounds from the UK, Brazil and beyond, and some more totally unheard 50s gems across the USA. How has it taken 60 years to find this gold?

Elvis Presley

Remember electronically reprocessed stereo? You had the singer coming out of one speaker, and the band out of the other. Well, you can forget that. Technological advances mean that the process Neophonic High Fidelity gives perfect stereo, and a breathtaking full sound to these timeless and historic tracks from the King of Rock’n’Roll’s early, and some say best, days. This was initially a vinyl offering, but is now out as a limited release CD, with no less than five engineered tracks extra as a bonus, so if you got the initial LP release, you’ll need this as well!

Seldom have the King’s early Sun and RCA cuts sounded so good. The package is enhanced with superb artwork, used to good effect on both LP and CD, but hurry if you want it since this CD run is strictly limited to 500. The choice of the 16 tracks, from Mystery Train to Wear My Ring Around Your Neck, is excellent, but there are sufficient classics from the period not given the treatment that we may be able to look forward to a second volume. Bring it on!
