“Eddie’s music had balls!”

UK rockabilly scene linchpin Darrel Higham salutes his hero and reveals his Top 5 Eddie Cochran tracks

In 1992, Darrel toured with Eddie Cochran’s backing band, The Kelly Four

You’ve been an Eddie fanatic from about the age of five. Above all the other 50s rockers, what makes him distinctive for you?

I’d heard Elvis prior to discovering Eddie Cochran and I became an instant Elvis fan. Discovering Eddie not long afterwards was helped through Elvis’ influence, in much the same way he influenced Eddie! But I found something else in Eddie’s music and image – and his image was very influential to me; the cover of Eddie’s Singin’ To My Baby LP was mean and moody and had that beautiful Gretsch guitar so prominently displayed on the cover. Eddie’s music seemed to match the dark and brooding cover image. Elvis’ music was much more cheerful in comparison – to me, anyway!
