THE SHADOWS

FOUR STEPS TO HEAVEN

BETWEEN ELVIS JOINING THE ARMY AND THE BEATLES EMERGING FROM LIVERPOOL, THE BRITISH CHARTS BELONGED TO FOUR CLEAN-CUT GUYS LED BY HANK MARVIN AND HIS MAGICAL RED GUITAR

If you had to point one man as the catalyst of British rock’n’roll, then Hank Marvin would be by far your most likely target. Indeed, it’s hard to think of a single electric guitar player of the ’60s who wasn’t inspired by him. Hank Marvin’s instantly recognisable sound first appeared on vinyl in 1958 and electrified a generation of youngsters to pick up a guitar – and some of those kids had names like Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend and Brian May. Today, Marvin’s assured, twangy tone still makes him one of the most instantly recognisable players in the cosmos. Since forming a skiffle combo called the Railroaders with friend and fellow Shadow Bruce Welch over 50 years ago, Marvin has enjoyed an epic career from backing the ‘English Elvis’ Cliff Richard to fronting one of the most successful instrumental bands of all time… and even stepping out as a solo act.
