Interflora’s lead designer and Head of Product Development Karen Barnes shares her top tips for choosing and planning your wedding flowers

Q I’m getting married at the end of October and would like to give a subtle nod to Halloween without anything looking scary! How should I display my flowers?

Autumn is all about colour. Warm reds, russets and yellows of changing leaves, the bright orange of pumpkins and deep browns of conkers all make for a beautifully warm wedding theme. Mini squashes can be used in the arrangements themselves, providing a suggestion of harvesttime, and you could consider using candles to create a warm, Halloween atmosphere. For a subtle nod, I would suggest blooms such as dahlias, rudbekia and physallis, with cordyline, miscanthus and oak leaves. Berries and fruit will also work well, and of course pumpkins, squashes and willow branches will add an extra bit of drama. Display your flowers and foliage to look informal, almost ‘just picked’. The use of the lined terracotta pots in various sizes creates a perfect look at this time of year.

About Wedding Flowers Magazine

Welcome to our latest issue! As we swap the balmy summer weather for crisp autumnal days, thoughts turn to the changing seasons, and thus, new flowers. I remember being surprised at the wealth of options my sister had for her flowers at her wedding last October; I thought all the best ones had bloomed in the summer, but I was so wrong. The rich colours, beautiful textures and unusual designs were simply amazing – we’ve featured the wedding on page 48 and I hope it inspires all future autumn brides! If you’re after reception décor ideas, then we’ve got plenty here! Flick to page 10 for our gorgeous moodboards, before heading to page 20 for some fabulous ideas on how to style your aisle. We’ve also got top tips from luxury wedding planner, Liz Linkleter, on page 24, a debate on whether you should go for real or faux flowers (page 28) and lastly, three real life brides put some of our favourite florists to the test in Challenge the Florist on page 26 – phew! There’s also giveaways aplenty here – make sure you turn to page 54 for your chance to win a blissful spa break at the award-winning Ragdale Hall, page 18 to win tickets to The National Wedding Show and page 67 to win a crafting bundle to make your own wedding stationery. And, of course, I have to mention our famous Flower Lookbook section – it is genuinely such a pleasure to be surrounded by such glorious flowers and innovative designs; if these beauties don’t inspire you, I don’t think anything will! From page 69, we have 50 pages of beautiful bouquets, tablecentres, buttonholes and everything in-between! Enjoy the issue and happy planning,
