Perched on the western slope of Cape Town’s Lion’s Head mountain, boutique hotel Ellerman House is a mix of Edwardian and contemporary design and offers superb art, wine and ocean views

I’d been in Cape Town for several days before staying at Ellerman House, but whenever I mentioned it to locals, the reply would be an excited “You’re in for such a treat.” Thankfully, they weren’t wrong: as soon as I arrived, I was told the hotel was my home away from home. There’s no hotel lobby or check-in desk; instead the front door was unlocked and I was ushered in, given a guided tour and then let loose to roam wherever I pleased. The Edwardian mansion, once home to Sir John and Lady Ellerman, sits on the slopes of Lion’s Head mountain, away from the hustle and bustle of central Cape Town, offering guests a vantage point towards the South Atlantic Ocean from the terraces. One of Ellerman House’s little luxuries is that it’s only open to residents, so you don’t have to jostle for position with tourists to admire the views, and the resulting serenity and space means you’re able to fully decompress and enjoy the finer things.
