Until 10th September

The world’s largest classical music festival is back at London’s Albert Hall for its 122nd season, with more than 90 concerts taking place over eight weeks. As ever, there are too many highlights to mention but standing out are Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel performing the title role in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, an evening celebrating the best of Ira Gershwin, and a weekend of Stravinsky’s music for the Ballets Russes. On the populist side, there’s a Strictly Prom, dedicated to all things ballroom and featuring the show’s dancers alongside former contestant and BBC Proms presenter Katie Derham. There’s a Bowie Prom, promising a celebration and reinterpretation of the star’s music from across the spectrum. And the Metropole Orkest, one of the world’s leading pop and jazz orchestras, plays the music of legendary producer and Michael Jackson collaborator Quincy Jones. If none of that tickles your fancy, there’s always the legendary Last Night, this year starring Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez. Once again, every prom is broadcast live on Radio 3, with highlights televised on BBC Two and BBC Four. Worth the licence fee alone.
