Until 25th September, London Wonderground

Like Cirque du Soleil, Cirque Alfonse are from French-speaking Canada, but as a circus troupe they couldn’t be more different. Latest show BARBU (meaning ‘bearded’ in French) is the perfect showcase for their madcap, off-the-wall take on the traditional circus; it features bearded, quirkily-costumed acrobats performing daredevil feats that will leave you both spellbound and occasionally bewildered. Throw in a dash of bonkers, absurdist humour and a heart-thumping score performed by an electro-folk band, and you might start to get an idea of what you’re in for. The intimate setting of London Wonderground’s Spiegeltent means the audience is so close to the performers you don’t always feel safe, but, when the costumes start to come off, the upside is you get to see the sweat glistening on their smoking-hot bodies. BARBU is exuberant, eccentric and incredibly sexy.
