EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE

If the International Festival is the daddy of Edinburgh festivals, then the Fringe is its badly-behaved, errant child. With a liberating lack of quality control, this year’s sprawling programme of over 3,000 events will as ever range from the exhilarating to the atrocious. Watch out for Scorch, a play about a gender-curious teen looking for love online, which won Best New Play at the 2015 Irish Theatre Awards and now comes to the Roundabout. Over at the Assembly, Tim Bell stars as Dame Nature in an evening of stand-up theatre inspired by the bearded ladies of Victorian music hall. At the Pleasance, the Eurovision-inspired party musical Eurobeat is back, this year set in Moldova and hosted by Rula Lenska and Step’s Lee Latchford- Evans. At the Underbelly’s Cow Barn is Saturday Night Forever, a rollercoaster ride around Cardiff’s gay scene starring actor Delme Thomas, and at C Venues, 5 Guys Chillin’ is a graphic verbatim drama set on the chemsex scene.
