HIBSOK is the social media pseudonym of a 25-year-old doctor and humanitarian worker who was born and raised in Baghdad before moving to Kurdistan early in 2007. He recently emigrated to Germany, but before leaving Iraq, wrote this from the Kurdish capital of Erbil.

Gay men in Erbil live in fear of harassment, persecution, and being tortured or killed. Most of them marry women but they’re often subjected to blackmail from men they meet, who threaten to spread the word to their workplace or even wives.
