The outing of Keith Vaz at the start of September by a major newspaper once again sparked a debate about whether or not there is ever a public interest in outing somebody in such a hugely-public way.

The two rent boys, alleged to have been paid by the former chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee for sex, and since paid by the newspaper too, were not the victims of this episode. Nor is Mr Vaz himself. No, the people really deserving of our sympathy are his wife and two daughters; they probably had no notice of the newspaper’s intentions, and it’s likely they were completely oblivious to their husband and father’s lewd sex life habits. They are truly victims.
