{HOT HOTEL} MANDARIN ORIENTAL, BANGKOK

Bangkok’s 140-year-old Mandarin Oriental has just been given a new lease of life that looks set to ensure the 19th-century hotel continues being the Thai capital’s most historic luxury offering well into the next century

The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok is celebrating its 140th anniversary. Built in the late 19th century, when Thailand was still the Kingdom of Siam, it was the country’s first luxury hotel. The original hotel, then known then as The Oriental, is today used as the famous Authors’ Wing. When the King of Siam visited he was so impressed, he hosted the future Tsar Nicholas II of Russia there and the hotel has been welcoming heads of state, business leaders, royals, writers and celebrities ever since. The Oriental became the Mandarin Oriental when Hong Kong’s The Mandarin hotel purchased it in 1974, creating one of the world’s leading hotel groups which now runs to nearly 30 properties, fanned across the globe. Over the years additional wings have been added and today the hotel has 324 rooms and 44 suites, still offering some of the best facilities and services in Asia.
