STAND UP AND STAND OUT

SUKI SANDHU IS THE FOUNDER AND CEO OF BOUTIQUE EXECUTIVE RECRUITMENT COMPANY AUDELISS AS WELL AS THE LGBT BUSINESS POWER LIST, OUTSTANDING AND ITS ETHNIC MINORITY-FOCUSED OFFSHOOT, UPSTANDING

Suki Sandhu is a self-confessed “working-class boy from Derby” (and very proud with it). His parents were born in India before they set up a grocery shop in the UK, where Sandhu was operating the cash register from the age of ten. “I learned early on the value of being able to support yourself,” he recalls. And these early years helped him form a compassionate and considerate approach to both life and business,

“When you grow up seeing customers struggling to pay for a loaf of bread, you’re exposed to the harsh realities of life at a very young age, and having that awareness of the disadvantages faced by so many people has always inspired me to want to make a good life for myself and to help others do the same,” he explains.

Aft er absorbing a hard-working ethic, Sandhu left his parents to study economics at the University of Birmingham. He hated the course: “I briefl y mulled over leaving. But my choice against becoming a doctor or a lawyer had already disappointed my grandma enough,” he laughs. He stuck it out, even though he subscribes to the ‘school of life’ approach to learning (“I believe that the real value of a person lies in the unique skills and experience that they bring to the table”), entered the world of recruitment and has now set up his own business, Audeliss, alongside the influential OUTstanding and more recently UPstanding power lists.

What were your career highlights prior to founding OUT/UPstanding and Audeliss?

About Winq

The new October/November issue of Winq is stuffed with gay goodness. We’ve got an exclusive interview and cover with disco-pop queen Sophie Ellis-Bextor and a second cover featuring Ricky Martin. Sophie Ellis-Bextor is back and better than ever on new album Familia, while Puerto-Rican heartthrob Ricky Martin reminds us why he’s still the king of Latin pop (and as smouldering as ever). Elsewhere we meet the UK’s only out jockey, chat with actor Mark Gatiss, celebrate 50 years of Coming Out with author Jeffrey Weeks, and get to grips with Anohni’s politically-charged new album. Plus a bumper wedding section and Karl Lagerfeld in our business section. The wait is over - Winq is the luxury lifestyle magazine for gay men.
