Mark Gatiss

His CV is outrageously impressive. Actor, screenwriter, television producer, comedian, novelist and director: Mark Gatiss is a man with more strings to his bow than should be allowed. But it's not the quantity of work for which he is named our 2016 Man of the Year, it's the quality sustained throughout his decades-long career, from his breakout role as one quarter of the team behind black comedy serieŝ e League of Gentlemen to his recent global triumphs as co-creator of the award-winning Sherlock and screenwriter for the BBC's Doctor Who. But, having just turned 50, is Gatiss, a master of the macabre, beginning to grow soft?

As we're settling down for a chat outside the Brighton Pavilion, Mark Gatiss is showing me a picture on his phone. It's only been a few days since the suckerpunch news that Donald Trump will soon be leaving fake tan all over the pristine sheets of the White House, and everyone is still smarting from the slap. Or else slack-jawed in disbelief. the picture is of a great, rolling cloud, thundering in towards the iconic pier. It was taken the night before the election results, and just before Gatiss took to the stage during the touring leg of his smash-hit play, the Boys in the Band. “I think this photo is what they call a prophetic fallacy," he says wryly...

Winq caught up with Gatiss just one issue ago, as his most recent play was about to begin. So, yes, it might be sooner than is deemed proper for him to be gracing our pages once more, but what can we say? Having been lifelong fans of the man behind the darkly-deliciouŝ the League of Gentlemen and the fiendishly-clever reboot of Sherlock , we just couldn't stay away for long. And we thought it was high time we showed Gatiss just how much we admire his work by making him our Winq Man of the Year, at our second annual awards ceremony.

When it comes to discussing the challenges of outsmarting Sherlock Holmes, the joys of RuPaul's Drag Race , and moving on from the macabre, we've always got room for Mark Gatiss. But first we need to address the elephant in the room. Or should that be the orangutan?
