RUNNING ON THE EDGE

The famous white cliffs of Dover

Britain may not have huge mountains, steaming rainforests or vast deserts, but it does have one hell of a lot of coast. Eleven thousand and 73 miles (17,820km) of it, according to those diligent fellows at Ordnance Survey. That’s more than Mexico, Italy, Brazil, Chile and India combined. Okay, not combined. Individually. But it’s still incredible. While we might not be blessed with some geographical elements found elsewhere, we’ve got the world’s 14th longest coastline, i.e. much, much more than our fair share. The edge of our country is one incredibly long stretch of curvy beaches, coy coves, plunging cliff-tops, spectacular views – and the occasional rickety Victorian pier – all just waiting to be played on.
