World of Pets Magazine  |  No.10 Lionhead rabbits

W ell, I guess it wasn’t a bad summer overall,
although we had to wait for the weather
to warm up this year! I’m sure that many
rabbits and guinea pigs will have had a
good opportunity to graze on the lawn in a run over recent weeks, and benefit
according from some restrictive exposure to sunlight.
But spare a thought for all the small furry pets that live permanently indoors,
without access to any natural sunlight. Could or should we be disturbed by this?
Lighting expert John Courtney-Smith, who also happens to be a keen small
animal fan, provides the answers in this issue.
If you keep guinea pigs, then you will have more insight than most into what
your pets are thinking. These chatty companions have a language of their own,
reinforced by the use of body posturing, to emphasise what they are saying. Sue
Reid acts as translator for you.
Should you like a good mystery though, do not despair, as we still have
several to offer you. These range from the case of the lionhead rabbit – surely
one of the most mysterious of the breeds that exist today? – to Dr Karl Shuker’s
accounts of the earth hound of Banffshire and another Scottish puzzle, the
lavellan, which reputedly occurs in the region of Caithness and Sutherland.
Also, if you are thinking of obtaining a small furry pet, or you know someone
who may be intending to acquire one or a group, then don’t miss our special
advice about adopting rather than buying your next pets.
Finally, if you live near Manchester, don’t forget that the Manchester Pet Show
will be taking place over the weekend of September 7th and 8th, at EventCity next
the Trafford Centre. Opening times are 9.30am-5.30pm. Meanwhile, down south,
there’s Pet Expo being held at the Glow Exhibition Centre, which lies adjacent to the
Bluewater Shopping Centre in Kent. This runs from Friday, 25th until Sunday, 27th
October. Full details of both events can be found easily online.
