Adult fairytale competition

Liz Taylorson has always surrounded herself with books. First she read them, leading to a degree in English Literature. Next she worked with them as a cataloguer of early printed books for a university library. Now she is attempting to write one as a member of the RNA New Writers’ Scheme. When not reading or writing Liz is often to be found on stage with her local amateur dramatic society. This story was inspired whilst rehearsing for a pantomime in which Liz was, appropriately enough, playing the fairy.

Once upon a time there was a kingdom in the far, snowy north, beyond the Northern Lights. In this kingdom there lived a king and he had three daughters. The eldest would inherit her father’s kingdom and many princes desired her for her riches. The youngest was the fairest, and many princes desired her for her beauty. The second princess was sharp and studious and she was not desired. On a midwinter night the eldest princess was married and the king held a ball. The light of a thousand candles sparkled on the jewels of a thousand ladies and in the night sky above the palace hung a thousand twinkling stars. The eldest princess was a modest bride but the youngest outshone all the other ladies and danced with only the most handsome princes in the room.
