The Girl

Fantasy Story competition winner

Jodie Carpenter is an English literature graduate, editorial assistant and tea enthusiast from Birmingham who doesn’t let a day go past without reading and writing about anything and everything. This is her first competition win and she looks forward to entering many more.

She was drunk. Drunker than me.

Which was good, because it meant she approached me first.

‘Let’s dance, gorgeous’.

Her voice was husky.

I had never been called ‘gorgeous’ before, and haven’t been since.

She looped her arm through mine, the one with the hand thrust deep into my jeans pocket in an attempt to look cool, and pulled me away from the wall I had been slouched against. My beer danced dangerously close to the rim of the glass and I had to move with her to save it from spilling. I was half dragged to the centre of the room, closer to the ear-bashing speakers pumping out a nondescript dance tune. She didn’t look the type to enjoy this sort of music. She looked like she had taste.
