CEMETERIES & FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH

Dig deep into burial sites with Tarja Moles

RESEARCH TIPS

The exact number of cemeteries, church yards and burial grounds in the UK is not known, but some estimates put the figure around 14,000. Burials in England and Wales used to take place mainly in churchyards, but when concerns about hygiene surfaced in the mid-19th century, larger municipal cemeteries on urban fringes were created. There are also private burial sites, burial grounds for people of distinct religious or national identity (eg for Jews and Muslims), natural burial sites and pet cemeteries. All in all, there are many types of burial grounds that you can investigate when doing cemetery research and/or finding out more about your family history.
