The publisher turned novelist tells Chris High how he mined his own experience of mental illness for his noiresque debut

‘A nna is kind of a manifestation of me, in a lot of ways,’ AJ Finn says of his protagonist in The Woman in the Window (Harper Collins). ‘She struggles with mental health issues, as do I. Anna is agoraphobic; I have often found it difficult in the not too distant past to prise myself out of bed let alone leave my house. If there can be said to be a benefit to such experiences then it lies in the fact they helped me bring empathy to her character. Even before I set pen to paper, I kind of knew Anna quite well which helped the writing process a great deal.’
