I found Finishing Touch by Claire-Louise Bennett, from her collection Pond (Stinging Fly Press), captivating from the first reading, and this month I’m going to explain why.

As usual, you’ll get most from the masterclass if you read the story for yourself (http://writ.rs/finishingtouchstory), and reviews suggest that the whole collection – in which the stories are linked – is well worth reading.

Finishing Touch is an unusual story in that almost nothing happens within the actual narrative. Instead the reader gets a stream of consciousness glimpse into the mind of the main character and into her memories, opinions and predictions of things that might or could happen.
