Despite having its frustrations, writing can be very satisfying and that satisfaction is increased when writing is followed by seeing your name in print – and being paid for it. Yet, as this magazine shows, neither writing (well) nor being published just happens: you have to work at it.

Whilst I have never made my whole living from writing, I have earned a useful part of it from publication for a good many years. With books (fiction and non-fiction), short stories, articles and more (I have also done some ghost writing and co-authored books), I reckon I have had more than 7 million words published. This means a great many commissions, conversations with editors and all the activity – from pitching to proofreading – that goes with it. Early on it quickly became apparent that I had much to learn if I wanted to make writing part of my work portfolio.
