Local reporter short story competition

Rhonwen Shaw is a retired speech and language therapist from Lancashire. She has been writing on and off for years but never showed her work to anyone. She completed Writing Magazine Creative Writing Courses’ Becoming A Successful Writer a couple of years ago, which gave her the confidence to share her writing with other people. Since then she has had one non-fiction article and one story published, but this is her first competition win.

Back in our junior reporter days, Tony Foster and I would often decide who would cover what story on the toss of a coin. On this occasion I called heads for the cat show, tails for the gravy wrestlers. As his coin spun in the air I rather hoped it would land on its edge and I wouldn’t have to do either of them. It was heads. I rolled my eyes, downed the last of my coffee and headed off to my car.

Lane Ends Community Centre car park was busier than I had ever seen it. Were there really that many cat lovers in Langton? I parked as close as I could and walked the hundred or so yards to the entrance, trying to think of some interesting angle, an original approach.
