Aconversation between two or more people usually follows traditional and timehonoured lines: first one person speaks, followed by another, then the other and so on. There’s never an obvious ‘now you’ signal, but it’s there all the same, like a built-in green light.

(Interestingly, it even exists on social media, where there’s no eye contact to help with these signals.)
