Goodbye competition winner

Jennifer Moore ‘s fiction has appeared in numerous publications on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Guardian, Mslexia and Short Fiction. Of course she‘s happy. Why wouldn‘t she be happy?

Helena heaves herself up onto her elbow, sighing her frustration out loud as she shifts her weight onto her backside in a clumsy rocking motion. There. She takes the turn slowly, walking her swollen feet round in a large arc to meet the edge of the bed and the floor beyond. Two puffy hands grip the wood of the frame for one final push. And she‘s up. Nothing to it. She glares at the blotched reflection in the mirror, willing the corners of her mouth up into a smile. Of course she‘s happy.
