Ten top tips: This is Halloween

This is Halloween

Get in the mood for Halloween with ideas to incorporate spooky ideas into your stories and wider writing life, from Liz Gregory

October is on the way, which means that it will soon be time for that most spooky of days. Halloween. Whether you dread these ghoulish goings-on or can’t wait to festoon yourself in an old sheet and go out trick-or-treating, there are plenty of ways to turn the occasion to your advantage as the inspiration for some writing projects.

Talk about traditions

Many of us associate Halloween with America, as many of the activities that take place to celebrate the occasion, such as dressing up to go trick-or-treating or carving pumpkins into grinning faces, were made popular across the pond before being adopted with enthusiasm over here. However, All Hallows Evening dates back much further than this, and is believed to be either an early Christian or pagan festival, dedicated to remembering the dead at the time when the boundary between this world and the next was believed to be at its thinnest. A well-researched piece that looks at the reasons behind some of the things people get up to on Halloween would be well-received by a number of publications, and the focus could be easily adapted for different target audiences such as parents or members of religious communities.
