The Oxford English Dictionary has declared post-truth to be the ‘word of the year’, while zythum, an Egyptian beer, has been replaced as the last word in the language by zyzzyva, a South American weevil.
Announced just before Wimbledon were the addition of over eighty tennis-related words and definitions to the online edition of the OED. Despite dating back to the 16th century, love, deuce and advantage have only now been officially acknowledged in terms of their on-court meanings. Superbrat might make people think of temperamental stars like John McEnroe, but OED senior editor Fiona McPherson noted ‘the word goes back to the 1950s, when in America it was used about badly behaved children and young adults.’ Other terms added to the OED include forced error and tennis mom/dad.
