The definition of distress is pretty clear in the radio handbook: a vessel or
person must be in grave and imminent danger. Perhaps the yacht is sinking, a crew member has been struck on the head and is bleeding from the ear, or all control has been lost and the vessel is being blown towards rocks? Those are all clear Maydays, but to stand a reasonable chance of rescue, the
decision to call for help has to be made some time before you look death in the eye.
