I love mixing patterns, textures and colours

Steph and Si Lumsdon have turned a dated Victorian terrace into a beautiful family home bursting with vibrant hues

Good idea!

If your favourite pretty plates are too nice to hide away in a cupboard, use them as decoration on a mantelpiece like Steph has done.

The dining room colour scheme was inspired by the turquoise tiles of the original fireplace, using coral as a complementary colour in accessories and the ombré feature wall. ‘I painted both the fire surround and the dining room white, and chose Eames-style chairs from MDM Furniture to give it a slight mid-century feel,’ says Steph

When Steph and Si Lumsdon decided to start a family, their dream was to swap their rented flat in Newcastle for a family home by the coast. ‘When I fell pregnant with Phoebe it was time to put down roots,’ says Steph, who’s originally from Cheshire, but moved north to study in Sunderland and stayed after graduating. ‘We love traditional properties with character so a Victorian terrace in Whitley Bay seemed a good option. This house had been on the market for a while, but it just felt right as soon as we walked through the door. Even though it had old-fashioned carpets and flock wallpaper, I loved the coving and original fireplaces, and could see past the dated décor.’

With four bedrooms – three on the first floor and one in the attic – it was perfect for Simon who often works from home and gave the family plenty of space to grow. It was also handy for good schools and within walking distance of the beach – both major plus points with a baby on the way.
