In bloom

Feature Isobel Smith image National Trust

February often sees us curled up under cosy blankets all month long. So make a change and brave the brisk temperatures to make the most of this time of year and see the very best of the snowdrops and other winter wonders. National Trust has compiled a list of the best sites to spot the bright white blooms, so why not get the family together to visit your closest park? Dunham Massey in Cheshire is home to the largest winter garden in the UK and over 200,000 single and double snowdrop bulbs have been planted since 2009. Visit Kingston Lacy in Dorset during the special snowdrop openings, which come alive as millions of flowers bloom to create a carpet of white. Take part in the annual snowdrop watch at Attingham Park in Shropshire and join the watch to find the first flower. If you’re greenthumbed, join the team at Bodnant Garden in Conwy, Wales, to help plant an extra 20,000 bulbs for future seasons. Log on to the website at for information.

About Your Home Magazine

Having spent a pretty penny at Christmas and splashed out in the January sales, February is the month when we need to seriously tighten our purse strings. But just because you’re on a budget doesn’t mean you can’t have a stylish home. In this special money-saving issue we’ve got hundreds of great ideas and affordable buys to make your home look sensational. We’ve even got some great suggestions for renters, who are often limited when it comes to decorating their rooms (p.36). Is your bathroom looking a little drab at the moment? Turn to page 46 to discover some really purse-friendly buys to give it a facelift, while on page 52 we’ve got a host of clever ways to give your kitchen a makeover without breaking the bank. If you’re planning on tackling some bigger home improvements this year, then take a look at page 106, where we give you the low-down on how to cut the cost of your projects. Even our craft projects have a moneysaving spin to them this month. From using up fabric scraps to re-purposing old magazines, you’ll love our creative upcycling ideas. If you just can’t resist a cheeky takeaway on a Friday night, then check out our fab cost-effective fakeaways on page 100. They’re delish! Finally, don’t forget to look out for our shopping bag logos throughout the magazine to discover our favourite bargain buys and money-saving tricks.
