It’s both work and budget friendly!

Getting organised with recycled and high street buys allowed Debbie Baker to create a dedicated study area full of innovative and inexpensive touches

Having opted to return to university in pursuit of a more challenging career, Debbie Baker knew things would have to change in the four-bedroom Wirral home she shares with daughters, Kelly and Sophie. ‘There was no way I was ever going to get coursework done at our busy kitchen table – plus there wasn’t really space for my computer,’ she explains. So in search of a more permanent solution Debbie set her sights on a tiny box room. ‘It’s supposed to be a guest room, but as it was rarely used and already housed my books, it made sense to make the most of what was wasted space,’ says Debbie.

STEP ONE With the room already in good condition the only preparation required was a quick trip to the local tip and the removal of a bulky sofa bed – which soon found a new home care of eBay! And while in the past Debbie had always played it safe with a space enhancing, allwhite scheme, this time around she was keen to introduce a little colour. ‘I already had the small red locker so my accent colour was never in doubt,’ she smiles. ‘However, to help soften the emerging red and white scheme, I also decided to introduce a warm grey feature wall, in order to add depth and interest to the room,’ she says. What’s more this classic combination should stand the test of time, as it can easily be updated by simply substituting the latest on-trend accent.
