My new-build house is brimming with character

With colour, pattern and unique touches, Lauren Nesbitt turned a nondescript interior into an inviting home full of personality
Matching the dresser, Lauren’s chunky wooden dining table from M&S is extendable and can seat eight guests for special occasions. The oak-finished top adds a touch of warmth and echoes the practical, wood-effect vinyl flooring

After several years of renting, first in London and then in Bath, Lauren Nesbitt and her husband Andrew felt ready to put down some roots, but as firsttime buyers their options were limited. Then, travelling home one afternoon, they spotted an attractive new housing development. ‘We’d only just started thinking about buying, but we really liked the look of the area,’ says Lauren. ‘The location was very handy for Andrew’s work in Bath, and it had a park nearby which would be ideal for our two dogs.’

Investigating further, Lauren discovered that by choosing a new-build they would qualify for the government’s Help to Buy scheme which meant they could get on the property ladder sooner. ‘I’d probably have preferred something older, with more character, but this was a great opportunity to buy our first home,’ she says. ‘We weren’t going to turn it down.’ There were various styles and sizes of homes available, but Lauren and Andrew decided to stretch their finances as far as they could to secure a four-bedroom house. ‘We both work from home, and it meant we could each have an office,’ explains Lauren. ‘We’d still have room for guests, and plenty of space for the dogs too.’
