We planned our ideal home from scratch

Linda and Richard Hannay utilised the skills of their family and friends to build the home they wanted to settle in

Linda and Richard Hannay spent five years in a constant fortnightly commute between Ireland and Scotland before they built their home on family land in Linda’s native Co. Wicklow. ‘We met in Dublin in 1997, and Richie invited me to Scotland for Hogmanay,’ says Linda. ‘There was an instant connection and that was it!’

Linda designed the kitchen as an ergonomic space. ‘I did design it before we had kids though’, she says. ‘My next project is to redesign the whole layout; we need more space now.’ The bar stools were found in Ikea, and the floor tiles are from Tom Doyle Tiles, in Camolin Co. Wexford

Richie, an engineer, worked two weeks on and two weeks off on an offshore oil rig off the coast of Aberdeen, Linda was a retail buyer for a company based in Dublin but travelling to China and India regularly. With a very understanding boss, Linda spent two weeks working in the Dublin office and two weeks working from a home office in Edinburgh while Richie was on leave.
