My hallway’s gone from bland to bling

Alexandra Powell’s hallway makeover has added colour and confident style to her home

Good idea!

One wall of paper can make a really strong colour or pattern statement without overwhelming the space.

Dark banisters, statement wallpaper and striped carpet have made Alexandra’s hallway a modern masterpiece

Total Cost £1,323

A lexandra Powell, 53, a Holistic Therapist, lives in Sarratt, Hertfordshire, with husband Den and sons Jonny and Will. When she moved to the 1930s property the hallway had pale walls, a beige carpet and an ugly front door making it bland but a good blank canvas. Alexandra’s style is bolder so she was keen to give her hallway a makeover as soon as possible. ‘I loved the house but the hallway was reminiscent of an operating theatre it was so stark!’ she laughs. ‘I wanted a space that was cosy and warm with confident style and a modern look, but I had off-white walls and a worn carpet so everything needed to change. I had all sorts of ideas and wanted to start as soon as possible!’ After weeks of creating boards on Pinterest, and scouring magazines for ideas, Alexandra had a head full of plans, ready to begin the transformation.

About Your Home Magazine

Now that all the festive fun is over and the decorations have come down your home can look a little sorry for itself, but not for long. In this issue we’ve got plenty of quick, easy and affordable ideas to give your home a fresh new look for the year ahead. While the sales are on, it’s a great time to bag a bargain, but rather than just buy an item because it’s cheap, we explain which homewares are really worth parting with your cash for in the sales (p.42). But before you go mad in the sales and bring back lots of bargain booty, now is the time to give your home a post-Christmas detox. On page 36 we show how to clear your clutter in style and discover space you never knew you had. If your bathroom and kitchen are looking past their best, turn to pages 46 and 52 to discover how easy it is to freshen them up with a few simple additions, from modern metallics to rustic touches, we’ve got lots of ideas to inspire you. If your New Year’s resolutions involve getting fitter and eating better, then turn to page 56 where we compare the latest wearable fitness trackers, while on page 12 we put personal smoothie makers to the test to see which give the best results. We’ve even given this month’s recipes a healthy spin, so you can eat well from breakfast through to supper. Finally, we’ve given our 12-page Make it Easy pull-out section a fresh new look for the New Year. Turn to page 59 for exciting craft, sewing and upcycling projects, plus the latest must haves for your craft stash.
