I created a home office in my new hallway

Simone Miller’s hallway extension freed up enough space for it to become a multi-functional room

Good idea!

Even the smallest area can be made into a home office with a compact console table and stool.

Simone’s new hallway is neat and contemporary with a home office area as well as storage for the family’s coats and shoes

Total Cost £1,735

When Simone Miller, 40, moved into her four-bedroom home in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, with husband Dan, children Chloe, nine, Freddy, seven, and dog Buster she was delighted to have a good sized hallway, but although she could see the potential, it was a very long way from the fresh, contemporary and welcoming space she dreamed of. An ugly 1980s front door was an unattractive feature and the staircase had bannisters that wobbled and needed replacing to be safe. With plans to extend the house at the front that would add extra space by the front door Simone knew she would soon have a wonderful hallway, but that she had her work cut out to give it the full overhaul and complete change of style needed.

About Your Home Magazine

Now that all the festive fun is over and the decorations have come down your home can look a little sorry for itself, but not for long. In this issue we’ve got plenty of quick, easy and affordable ideas to give your home a fresh new look for the year ahead. While the sales are on, it’s a great time to bag a bargain, but rather than just buy an item because it’s cheap, we explain which homewares are really worth parting with your cash for in the sales (p.42). But before you go mad in the sales and bring back lots of bargain booty, now is the time to give your home a post-Christmas detox. On page 36 we show how to clear your clutter in style and discover space you never knew you had. If your bathroom and kitchen are looking past their best, turn to pages 46 and 52 to discover how easy it is to freshen them up with a few simple additions, from modern metallics to rustic touches, we’ve got lots of ideas to inspire you. If your New Year’s resolutions involve getting fitter and eating better, then turn to page 56 where we compare the latest wearable fitness trackers, while on page 12 we put personal smoothie makers to the test to see which give the best results. We’ve even given this month’s recipes a healthy spin, so you can eat well from breakfast through to supper. Finally, we’ve given our 12-page Make it Easy pull-out section a fresh new look for the New Year. Turn to page 59 for exciting craft, sewing and upcycling projects, plus the latest must haves for your craft stash.
