Happy childhood memories made me save this cottage

Deirdre Dowling transformed this run down cottage into a charming, welcoming home while still preserving its character
Deirdre likes to mix old and new, so teamed the old-style dresser, from Broughtons of Leicester with a new fitted kitchen from B&Q that was a gift from her parents

Good idea!

Try to reuse and recycle as many materials as possible, it saves money and also keeps the character of your home.

As a child Deirdre Dowling lived close to this quaint little cottage and had fond memories of visiting it. ‘My parents were good friends with the couple that owned it and I always remember thinking it was a magical place with its thatched roof and white washed walls, the chickens in the yard and the black pots and kettle hanging over the turf fire, it was like something out of a fairy tale.’ Years later on trips back home to visit her family, Deirdre was sad to see that the cottage was falling into disrepair, the back wall was leaning out and crumbling under the weight of a new roof that had been put on to cover the original disintegrating thatched roof. ‘The whole cottage was damp and derelict, the garden was so overgrown that you couldn’t even drive a car down the lane to the cottage, however I could still remember how the cottage used to be, the charm, warmth and character, so I knew I had to buy it to save it,’ says Deirdre.

On page 36 we show how to clear your clutter in style and discover space you never knew you had. If your bathroom and kitchen are looking past their best, turn to pages 46 and 52 to discover how easy it is to freshen them up with a few simple additions, from modern metallics to rustic touches, we’ve got lots of ideas to inspire you.
