Make more space by converting your garage

Why let the garage go to waste when you could transform it into useful living space? Here’s how…

Many of us complain that we’re outgrowing our homes, without considering how much space is wasted in the garage, where everything from skis and broken chairs to cans of paint and bikes has piled up over the years. Converting this area could easily provide the additional living space you need, and increase your home’s value by up to 10 per cent. Unlike when building an extension, you won’t have to give up part of the garden, and work is fairly straightforward as the structure is already in place.

Go for floor-to-ceiling shelving and under-floor heating rather than radiators to maximise usable floor space

1 TYPES OF GARAGE

Garages fall into three camps: attached, integrated or detached. Attached garages usually sit to the side of the house and are accessed through the hallway or kitchen. They’re common in homes dating from the 1930s onwards, and are single or double-sized with flat or pitched roofs. An integrated single or double garage forms part of the fabric of the house, with a bedroom built above. Such garages are generally at the side or project from the front in larger properties, and have usually been constructed within the last 50 years. Some homes may have detached garages, positioned next to the house or further down the garden, which can limit the conversion potential.

About Your Home Magazine

Now that all the festive fun is over and the decorations have come down your home can look a little sorry for itself, but not for long. In this issue we’ve got plenty of quick, easy and affordable ideas to give your home a fresh new look for the year ahead. While the sales are on, it’s a great time to bag a bargain, but rather than just buy an item because it’s cheap, we explain which homewares are really worth parting with your cash for in the sales (p.42). But before you go mad in the sales and bring back lots of bargain booty, now is the time to give your home a post-Christmas detox. On page 36 we show how to clear your clutter in style and discover space you never knew you had. If your bathroom and kitchen are looking past their best, turn to pages 46 and 52 to discover how easy it is to freshen them up with a few simple additions, from modern metallics to rustic touches, we’ve got lots of ideas to inspire you. If your New Year’s resolutions involve getting fitter and eating better, then turn to page 56 where we compare the latest wearable fitness trackers, while on page 12 we put personal smoothie makers to the test to see which give the best results. We’ve even given this month’s recipes a healthy spin, so you can eat well from breakfast through to supper. Finally, we’ve given our 12-page Make it Easy pull-out section a fresh new look for the New Year. Turn to page 59 for exciting craft, sewing and upcycling projects, plus the latest must haves for your craft stash.
