We added personality to our kitchen for just £1,000

With just a couple of tins of paint, clever ideas and a handy husband, Gill Holland has transformed modern units into a vintage-inspired kitchen on a budget

Good idea!

Cover up unattractive appliances with a handmade curtain. Red striped linen fabric adds bold colour to this blue and cream kitchen.

Total Cost £1,091

Gill wanted a lighter brighter kitchen but with a warm and welcoming feel. She was inspired by country style but wanted to give her room a modern twist. Gill originally wanted to get rid of the wall cupboards but she couldn’t afford to lose the storage space. So instead she painted the top cupboards to blend back into the wall colour seamlessly

When Gill, and her husband Neil Holland, moved into their 1950s cottage in East Grinstead they wanted to give their plain wooden kitchen a colourful revamp without breaking the bank. ‘The original kitchen was a new faux wooden one which wasn’t to my taste. I wanted a lighter brighter kitchen with a warm feel, one that had a country style but with a modern twist,’ explains Gill. Four years ago, she set up a vintage business called Giddy Goat Hand Painted Furniture. With her expert painting knowhow she tackled the kitchen herself with the help of her husband. ‘I work with Annie Sloan paint for my business and I love to use colour on my painted furniture so I knew I could use her paints to bring colour to my kitchen too,’ she explains.
